Susan Levitin will perform works of Bach, Copland, Roussel and Villa Lobos with The Chicago Ensemble on
Tuesday, November 29 at 7:30 P.M. at 4th Presbyterian Church, Michigan Ave. and Chestnut
Sunday, December 4 at 3P.M. at International house of the University of Chicago at 59th Street and Dorchester.
Ms. Levitin is a Verne Q. Powell Recording Artist.
Susan Levitin, flutist, is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Joseph Mariano. Her other teachers include William Kincaid and Ralph Johnson. Ms. Levitin currently performs with the Chicago Ensemble and has played with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Rochester Philharmonic, and the Eastman Philharmonia with which she was a featured soloist on a State Department-sponsored international tour. Susan is a frequent soloist in live radio broadcasts on WFMT-Chicago and has recorded two solo CDs: 20th Century American Music for Flute & Piano (Mark Records, 2000) and La Flûte Lumineuse: French Music for Flute & Piano (Mark Records, 1996). She is also featured with the Eastman-Rochester Philharmonic on Music for Quiet Listening (Mercury Living Presence, 1962) and with the Eastman Wind Ensemble in Music of the Civil War (Mercury Living Presence, 1962).
Ms. Levitin is one of the leading flute pedagogues in the country and has made numerous presentations on motivating gifted high school students including National Flute Association conventions. She also has articles published in Flute Talk magazine. Her students have won prestigious competitions, including the NFA National High School Soloist Competition, the Chicago Symphony’s Illinois Young Performers Competition, and the Society of America Musicians Flute Competitions. Ms. Levitin’s students have gone on to attend the Curtis Institute, DePaul School of Music, Eastman School of Music, Indiana University School of Music, Juilliard School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, Northwestern University School of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Peabody Conservatory, Rice University, Roosevelt University Graduate Orchestral Program, University of Illinois School of Music, and the University of Michigan School of Music, and many former students now hold principal positions with major orchestras throughout the country.
Ms. Levitin is currently on the Artist Faculty at the Sherwood Conservatory of Music in Chicago, where she is the director of the Sherwood Flute Institute, an intensive, week-long workshop for serious high school students and co-director of the Sherwood Summer Chamber Music Institute, a two-week intensive chamber program for gifted instrumentalists. She is also the founder of the Festival of Flutes, an annual program in which nearly 200 flute students of all ages and levels participate in evaluated recitals.
Ms. Levitin has a Hyde Park studio where she teaches all levels and ages. She also coaches students in chamber music and flute ensemble classes and assists students with audition preparation and recordings.
