Flutist Elizabeth Ko moved to the Chicago area in 1991 and received a Masters degree in flute performance fromDePaul University, studying in the studio of Mary Stolper. She has maintained a private teaching studio in her Hyde Park home for the last nine years and is also a faculty member at the Merit School of Music where she is chair of the Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Department. As a teacher, her goals are tohelp her students to:

  • Improve their level of flute playing through the study of varied repertoire, adapting to each student’s unique learning style and pace
  • Use their musical study to develop personal skills, such as problem solving, perseverance, and stage presence that will help them in other areas of their life
  • Develop a lifelong love of music, which can be pursued through continued performance or by enjoyment as a listener

All students perform at least once a year in recital and those who wish to purse other performance opportunities are encouraged to do so. These opportunities have included:

  • Membership in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Hyde Park Youth Symphony
  • Study in the Tuition Free Conservatory at the Merit School of Music
  • Participation in the competitions sponsored by the Chicago Flute Club and the Society of American Musicians
  • Performance at the Sherwood Conservatory Festival of Flutes
  • Participation in the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music exam curriculum
  • Summer study at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater Flute Camp, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Interlochen Arts Camp and Northwestern’s National High School Institute

As a performer, Ms. Ko is an active freelancer. She often gives solo recitals in addition to performing with the University Trio, a chamber group for flute, violin and viola. Ms. Ko has been a soloist on WFMT’s program “Live from Studio One” and at the National Flute Association’s annual convention. She can also be heard performing on the compact disc “Dancing on the Edge of a Volcano”, a collection of Jewish cabaret music released in 2002 by Cedille Records.
