Member of a long-established Chicago musical family, Charlotte Lehnhoff has been teaching musicianship, aural skills, and cello in Hyde Park for over twenty-five years. She was on the facultyof the Lehnhoff School of Music and Dance in Hyde Park, and was Lecturer in the Department of Music at Chicago State University for fourteen years.
At Chicago State, she taught classes for Music majors and for the general student population. For Music majors, she taught courses at all levels in Music History and Literature, Music Theory, and Aural Skills. These classes included ear training, sight-singing and sight-reading, dictation, and keyboard harmony. For non-music majors, she taught Music Fundamentals, which is an introduction to note-reading.
She authored a textbook for Aural Skills and Music Fundamentals, which was used for nine years.
At her recommendation, the Music Department reinstated a course which had not been offered for many years, Introduction to Music Theory, a preparatory course for Music Majors.
In her private studio in addition to her cello students she has coached singers active in Chicago opera, Chicago-area choruses and choral societies. She has helped them develop as well as improve their sight-reading skills.
Ms. Lehnhoff received the degree of Master of Music in Music Theory from the School of Music at the University of Michigan, and has done PhD studies in Music Theory in the Music Department at the University of Chicago. Her master’s thesis, “The Structural Function of Recitative in Beethoven’s Christus Am Oelberge, Opus 85″ is a seminal contribution to this field of study.
